Custom printed carton — made to order: size, board grade, printing and surface finish are all specified per run.
A printed carton does two jobs that are usually split between a shipper and a retail pack: it survives the journey and it sells the product on arrival. High-resolution colour across the full face, laminated and finished, means the box that comes off the pallet goes straight onto a shelf or into a customer’s hands without being unpacked into something prettier.
Finishes that change how the box reads
Gloss lamination saturates colour and reads as commercial; matt lamination mutes it and reads as considered, and it shows fingerprints less. Spot UV picks out a logo or a pattern in gloss against a matt ground. Hot foil adds real metallic shine that no ink reproduces. A window shows the product without opening the box. Each of these is a separate pass on the line, so they are costed per unit rather than absorbed.
Ordering
Size, board grade, printing and surface finish are made to order. Compression strength is 3 of 5 — this is a presentation carton that ships, not a heavy-duty shipper, so pack it inside a corrugated carton for bulk transit if the route is long. Artwork setup, dielines and colour matching are covered in printing and finishing.
What moves the price
Finishes, each of which is a separate pass. Lamination, spot UV, hot foil and a die-cut window are four distinct operations and four increments, and they are the difference between a modest carton price and a substantial one. Board grade and size behave as elsewhere. Print plates are a first-order cost recovered on repeats, so the second run of the same artwork is materially cheaper — worth knowing before a packaging redesign.
Where it goes wrong
Specifying every finish because each looks good in isolation. Gloss lamination, spot UV and hot foil on one carton is a pack that reads as busy and costs three times what it needed to. The second is treating it as a shipper: at 3 of 5 compression this carton ships, it does not protect a stacked pallet, and it belongs inside a corrugated outer on a long route. The third is artwork approved without a dieline, which is how a logo ends up on a fold.
Where custom printed carton is used
Retail and gift ranges where the box is the shelf presentation, and subscription and e-commerce packs where the unboxing is part of the product. The printing and finishing page covers the finishes, the artwork requirements and what each pass costs. For bulk transit it travels inside a corrugated carton rather than alone.
What to send us for a quotation
A quotation for custom printed carton is written against a specification, so the more of this you can send, the closer the first number is to the real one: which structure, or the shelf life and the product so we can choose one — Colour-printed corrugated board are available here; the temperature the pack has to survive, from filling through to how the customer opens it (ambient for this product); the line it runs on — this one is specified for die cutting and Coating / laminating; which options you want fitted: gloss laminated, Matt laminated and Spot UV; the values for size, Board grade, Printing and Surface finish.
Send the fill weight and the quantity with it. Where you already buy something similar, a sample is worth more than a description — we measure what is actually there rather than quoting against how it was once written down.
Food-contact and export requirements are set out in ISPM 15, the international standard for wood packaging crossing a border; the declarations for this structure are issued with the order.
