What buying direct from China actually involves

Four places an order goes wrong, and what we do about each of them.

The factory may not be a factory

A great many listings on trading platforms are agents rather than manufacturers, and an agent adds a margin and a layer between you and the line running your order. We verify the site physically — business licence, production capability, the equipment that would actually make your product — before anything is quoted.

The sample is not the shipment

A golden sample made by hand under supervision tells you very little about what a production line produces at volume. Inspection at the site, against a written specification agreed before production, is what closes that gap — and it has to happen before the goods ship, because nothing is cheaper to fix after a container has sailed.

The specification was never agreed

Most disputes are not dishonesty; they are two parties who wrote down different things. Thickness tolerance, colour reference, seal strength, packing method, carton marking and what counts as a defect all have to be written before production rather than argued afterwards. We produce that document and hold both sides to it.

The paperwork stops the goods

Compliance holds shipments far more often than quality does. Food-contact declarations, the right HS code, correct carton marking, fumigation certificates for timber, and an Incoterm both sides actually understand. We prepare the set that travels with the goods — see export packaging compliance for what that set contains.

Questions about sourcing from China

Do you only source packaging?

Packaging is what we know best, and it is where our own manufacturing relationships are. We also source adjacent categories for buyers already working with us — but we say no to a category we cannot inspect competently rather than take it on and learn at your expense.

How are you paid — commission from the factory, or by me?

By you. A sourcing agent paid by the factory has an interest in the factory, which is the opposite of the job. Our fee comes from the buyer, so the advice on which supplier to use is not an advertisement.

Can you inspect a factory I already use?

Yes. Inspection, audit coordination and pre-shipment checks are available on their own, without moving your supplier. Several buyers start there.

What happens if the goods are wrong?

That depends on when it is found. Caught at pre-shipment inspection, it is a production problem and is fixed before the container loads. Caught on arrival, it is a claim, and the written specification is what the claim rests on — which is why it exists.

Do you handle shipping and customs?

We prepare the export documentation and coordinate freight, and we work to whichever Incoterm you choose. Customs clearance at the destination is normally handled by your own broker, who knows your market better than we do.

What is the minimum order you will handle?

It depends more on the product than on a figure. A first order small enough to be a trial is often worth doing badly by a factory and well by us. Send the requirement and we will say plainly whether we are the right people for it.

Have a sourcing requirement?

Tell us what you need. Our team will respond within 24 hours.

Key Information

ALLWINS global sourcing helps international buyers find, vet and manage Chinese manufacturers for packaging and industrial products, covering supplier screening, quality control and export logistics — the parts of importing that usually go wrong through ordinary mismatch rather than fraud.

  • Supplier screening checks the business licence and registered scope to establish whether a supplier is a factory or a trading company.
  • Pre-shipment inspection happens before the balance payment, which is the only point at which it has leverage.
  • Quotations are only comparable when structure, thickness, print method and run quantity are stated identically.
  • Export documentation travels with the shipment rather than being issued afterwards.
  • Most losses in Chinese sourcing come from specification drift, not from fraud.
What does a sourcing partner actually do?

Screens the factory, makes competing quotations comparable, manages samples and approval, inspects before the balance is paid, and handles the export paperwork — the steps where an import usually goes wrong.

How do I know a Chinese supplier is a real factory?

The business licence states the registered scope. Read it, then ask for footage of the specific machine that will run the job.

When should inspection happen?

Before the balance payment. Inspecting afterwards records a problem instead of preventing one.
